Who Is Responsible

Responsible for the processing of personal data on this website is David Brandstötter, Graz, Austria. You can reach me at hello@mathematicsvisualized.com or via the contact page.

Collection and Processing of Personal Data

This is a static website without user accounts, and it does not collect any data on its own. You only provide data to Mathematics Visualized if you subscribe to the newsletter, offer support on Patreon, send an email with your ideas, or make a donation via Bitcoin.

For Patreon, please refer to the privacy policy on their website. If you send in your ideas, your email address is stored in the email account of Mathematics Visualized. In the case of a Bitcoin donation, the addresses used as inputs or outputs of the transaction are visible. However, since these are publicly visible on the blockchain anyway, this does not amount to any more data than anyone else has.

Newsletter

If you subscribe to the newsletter, your email address is used for one purpose only: to let you know by email when new stories are published. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR).

Subscribing uses the double opt-in procedure: after entering your email address you receive a confirmation email, and only once you click the link in it is your subscription active. To be able to prove your consent, the time of your sign-up and confirmation and the IP address used are stored along with your email address.

The newsletter is sent with MailerLite, an email service provider based in the European Union, which processes this data on behalf of Mathematics Visualized on the basis of a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR). Whether an email was opened or which links in it were clicked is not tracked. Details can be found in MailerLite's privacy policy.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the end of every newsletter, or by sending an email. Your email address is then removed from the list. Without an unsubscription, it is stored for as long as the newsletter exists.

Hosting and External Resources

This website is hosted on Microsoft Azure. As with any website, the server briefly processes technical data such as your IP address and the time of access in order to deliver the pages to you.

To display the pages, fonts and scripts are loaded from external servers: fonts from Google Fonts (Google), mathematical formulas via MathJax and further libraries from jsDelivr, unpkg, code.jquery.com and StackPath. In doing so, your browser transmits your IP address to these providers, as this is technically necessary to load the files.

Disclosure to Third Parties

Apart from the service providers named above, personal data is not shared with third parties. Should it become necessary — for example, in the context of discussing an idea for a Story you submitted, where you would like to be credited as the author — your explicit permission will be requested beforehand.

Cookies and Tracking

No cookies and no tracking or analytics tools are used. Your display settings, such as the choice between light and dark mode and, where applicable, your preferred language, are saved in the local storage of your browser, so they are remembered on your next visit. This information never leaves your device.

Your Rights

You are generally entitled to the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection. To exercise them, please get in touch via the contact page.

If you believe that the processing of your data violates data protection law or that your data protection rights have otherwise been infringed, you can lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority. In Austria, the Austrian Data Protection Authority (Datenschutzbehörde) is responsible.
